To-ji Temple


"Tō-ji Temple (Japanese: 東寺)" is Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect (真言宗, Shingon-syu) and it was created in 796 transfered the capital to Heiankyo (平安京). The formal name of Tō-ji Temple is Kyō-ō-gokoku-ji (教王護国寺, The Temple for the Defense of the Nation by Means of the King of Doctrines). This To-ji Temple name means East Temple, and it once had a partner, Sai-ji (West Temple). They stood alongside the Rashomon, the gate to the Heian capital. Tō-ji is often associated with Kōbō Daishi (or Kūkai, 弘法大師 = 空海, 774 - 835). The well-known Buddhist priest was put in charge of Tō-ji in 823 by order of Emperor Saga (嵯峨天皇, 786 - 842). To-ji Temple was registered in World Heritage as "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" in 1994.
The public transportation facility to To-ji Temple are "Kyoto City bus (京都市バス, Kyoto shi basu)" or "Kintetsu Railway (近鉄)". To-ji Temple is from the JR Kyoto Station (No. 78 or 19 bus) to about 5 minutes by bus, or From JR Kyoto Station to 15 minutes on foot, or From Toji station, Kintetsu Railway to 10 minutes on foot.
